In the heart of Ayala Parish, Alito Sub-county, Lira District, Oakdale Brook proudly runs the Oaks of Grace Girls Football Club—a transformative initiative dedicated to empowering rural girls through sports. Our mission is to address critical challenges such as school dropouts, early pregnancies, child marriages, and limited access to education. Founded two years ago, the club held its first official football tournament on December 25, 2024. Football, the girls' favorite sport, serves as a powerful tool for change—helping them build resilience, gain confidence, and envision a future beyond their current circumstances. Today, the club has 30 active members, each striving to overcome societal barriers through the game they love.
Girls in these communities face significant hardships. Limited access to education, financial constraints, and long travel distances to the nearest schools force many to drop out. With only one primary school per village and just one secondary school for the entire sub-county, the odds are stacked against them. Many girls are also vulnerable to societal pressures, including early marriages and pregnancies, due to the absence of safe spaces, mentorship, and alternative opportunities. Without value-driven programs that foster self-worth and life skills, they struggle to break free from cycles of poverty and dependency.
The Oaks of Grace Girls Football Club is more than just a sports team—it’s a sanctuary where girls can grow, learn, and thrive. Through this initiative, we:
To further support these girls, we have identified key projects that will drive their growth and development. With the help of donors and community members, we aim to implement the following initiatives:
Objective: Improve menstrual hygiene and uphold the dignity of girls.
Why It Matters: Many girls in rural areas struggle to afford sanitary products, leading to school absenteeism, stigma, and low self-esteem. By teaching them to make reusable sanitary pads, we provide a sustainable solution that empowers them to manage their menstrual health with confidence. Additionally, we plan to distribute hygiene kits containing other essential products to support their well-being.
Objective: Ensure that all girls remain in school or are re-enrolled if they have dropped out.
Why It Matters: Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. However, financial struggles and long travel distances force many girls out of school. Through scholarships, learning materials, and mentorship, we aim to keep them in school and reinstate those who have dropped out, whether into primary, secondary, or vocational training programs.
Objective: Sustain and develop the football club while enabling the girls to participate in tournaments.
Why It Matters: The football club is more than just a sports team—it’s a place of belonging, confidence-building, and self-discovery. By supporting tournament participation, we give these girls recognition and expand their opportunities, fostering discipline, teamwork, and resilience—qualities that benefit them throughout their lives.
Objective: Create a dedicated space for innovation, skills training, and education.
Why It Matters: A learning and skilling center will provide opportunities for the girls to explore technology, fashion, arts, and entrepreneurship. By equipping them with vocational skills, we pave the way for economic independence and a brighter future beyond traditional limitations.
We invite you to join us in this noble cause. Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of these young girls, providing them with opportunities to thrive, learn, and achieve their dreams. Together, we can create a brighter future for them and their communities.
